Education of the heart

One of the autobiographies from our Burnett Archive of Working Class Autobiographies recently featured in an episode of Five Hundred Years of Friendship on BBC Radio 4. Education of the heart looks at how friendship between children was viewed.

Harry West’s autobiography was written during his retirement, but covers his childhood in the N. Somerset/Bristol area in the late 19th century, education at Board and Sunday Schools as well as his later working life and descriptions of village life.

You can read more about the history of friendship as portrayed in the working class autobiographies on the Writing Lives blog, where there is also more about Harry West’s autobiography in particular.
